Weather has been a real challenge on this trip. You would expect hot, dry weather in the Badlands. Instead, rain is forecast every day of the week and the temperatures have been from the 50’s to mid-70’s. Didn’t think I’d be wearing a long sleeve shirt in the mornings on this trip! I was getting really discouraged on Monday morning. It was foggy, raining, cold and miserable. But the sun started breaking though around 10 am. That didn’t prevent the wildlife from being out.

Another batch of storms came in during the late afternoon. I decided to go with it and headed back out a couple hours before sunset. I tried getting some pictures of the dramatic clouds, but was having trouble remembering how to bracket shots so they could be combined later.

After playing with cloud photos, I was hoping the skies would clear and I would get some good light closer to sunset. That almost happened. The storm started to breakup and I got a nice rainbow photo. Wouldn’t have gotten that if I stayed at the campground!

But the sun was still blocked at sunset, which created some interesting lighting on the horizon.

It was overcast again Tuesday morning, but at least it wasn’t raining. Around 10 am, I got some sun light peaking between the clouds from time to time.

I’ll head out again late this afternoon and hope get some good light around sunset…
