On Tuesday morning, we headed out to see Sisters Rock. Even while using navigation, I overshot the trailhead parking lot. Turnouts are not always marked very clearly. The next place I could turn around turned out to be the Arizona Beach access road, so I decide to stop since we were already there.
I hadn’t planned to visit Arizona Beach. The pictures I saw online didn’t look that interesting. But it turned out to be a really nice beach. There are lots of rock formations on the north and south ends of the beach, which I enjoyed exploring.
Right now, at least, you can’t get to the beach without wading through a tidal pool. So off came the shoes and socks and we waded through the tidal pool. And, boy, that water is cold. Like mountain stream cold!
Once on the beach, I saw there several seagulls at the north end of the beach. We were the only ones on the beach, so I decided to treat Sam and let him off leash so he could chase the seagulls. He went flying down the beach towards the seagulls. Much to my surprise, once the seagulls took off, Sam went bounding into the water!

Sam has never gone far into water, so I didn’t even know if he knows how to swim. But he was about 30 feet out in some fairly strong surf. I started running down the beach to retrieve him when he disappeared behind one of the rocks! I thought, “Oh great, my Sammy is going to drowned”. Luckily, he appeared from behind the rock and came to shore when I started calling him. Sammy was not flustered, but I probably won’t do that again any time soon.

After getting Sammy was safely back on leash, we continued to explore the north end of Arizona Beach. Then we walked to the south end of the beach to explore the rock formations there. I ended up having a much better time at Arizona Beach than I expected!

We checked out the south end of the tidal pool to see if we could get across without wading, but no luck there. There was also something weird at the south end of the tidal pool. After closer examination, it turned out to be a fairly decayed whale carcass. Yuck. Note to self – take a show once I get back to camp after walking through that water…

Then we headed back to the north trailhead for Sisters Rock. Sisters Rock has been my favorite place on the Oregon coast so far. The Sisters Rocks are interesting and the beaches to the north and south of Sisters Rock look amazing. By this point, we had walked/hiked 4.5 mile and I was starting to get tired. So, I decided to check out the Sisters Rock beaches on Wednesday.
