The section of Kalaloch Beach at the campground is a bit lack luster – sand beach with a lot of driftwood. But the campground is amazing. Most of the campsites are under a canopy of these amazing, wind sculpted, mossy trees. They look they came of a Grimms fairytale.
Sadly, the famous Tree of Life at Kalaloch Beach has seen better days. Evidently, a King tide washed away more of the soil, so the Tree of Life is sagging more than it used to.
I said the beach is lack luster, but the clouds have been gorgeous and dramatic. Why didn’t I have clouds like these in Oregon!?!
The sunsets haven’t been bad either.
On Thursday night, I decided to take it easy and skip sunset. Then I peeked out of the van and saw these amazing colors in the sky. So Sammy and I jogged to the beach access trailhead to take a couple quick pictures.
I almost wrote off the other sections of Kalaloch Beach based on way I saw at the campground, but that would have been a big mistake. Today (Friday, Sept 5), we hiked down to what they call Beach 3 and Beach 4. Those beaches are much more interesting.
At Beach 3, we were the only ones on the beach that weren’t fishing. But that was fine. All the fishing was concentrated near the trailhead, which left the rest of the beach to me and Sammy.
Near the north end of Beach 3, there is a huge tree stump. It’s about 8 feet tall. I would have loved to see what that tree looked like when it was alive. I didn’t know it at the time, but the north end of Beach 3 is close to the trailhead for Beach 4.
Beach 4 is one of the most unique beaches that I’ve seen. First you cross an interesting bridge at the end of the tail. Then you climb down these Vasquez like rocks to get to the beach. At first I didn’t think I could do that with Sammy on the leash, but we made it down to the beach.
I plan to visit some of the other Kalaloch beaches tomorrow…
