I’m into my second day at Beavertail Campground on the Deschutes River. It’s pretty out here in a stark, isolated way. I’m surrounded by mountains and the campsite is right next to the Deschutes River. I’d like to see it in the spring when the hillsides are green and flowers are blooming.
I could have driven here in one day from SandBeach Campground, but I happened to see a video on slow travel where you only drive 100 miles a day. So, I thought I’d give it a try. On Friday, I drove from Sandbeach Campground to Wyeth Campground off the Columbia River. Then on Saturday, we had a short drive the rest of the way to Beavertrail Campground.
I had no idea it was so mountainous along the Columbia River. What I saw was very pretty, though I had to stay focused on driving. Might be an area to explore in the future.
It’s been a bit of a shock getting back to Oregon’s high desert. On the coast, I would say it was hot when it got up to 66 degrees! Yesterday, it was 80 degrees at Beavertail Campground – the van got up to 90 degrees. I put up the tarp this morning. So far that seems to be keeping the van cooler.
The sun feels so intense here, so I walk Sam early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The rest of the time, I’m resting in the shade. Luckily, my campsite has trees around the picnic area, so I can more around to stay in the shade.
Back in July, I couldn’t make reservations in Grand Teton National Park. I checked last night and there are openings the last week in September and the first week in October before the Gros Ventre Campground closes for the season. I’m trying to decide if I should head that way before going further south for winter…
