I was supposed to spend four nights at Sol Duc Campground in Olympic National Park, but that didn’t work out…
Monday morning started fine. Woke up at Kalaloch Campground, walked Sam, made breakfast and made another visit to Ruby Beach since we pass it on the way to Sol Duc.
I decided to go past Sol Duc and drive into Port Angeles to pick up supplies at the Walmart Supper Center. On the way to Port Angeles, we drove past the beautiful Cresent Lake. That was an unexpected surprise! Lakes don’t come to mind went I think about Olympic National Park.

After Port Angeles, I made lunch by the side of Cresent Lake and then headed on to Sol Duc Campground. When I located the “RV” campground, I found a gravel rectangle with 3 large stones separating each parking space. Each space with their own power and water hookup.
As National Park campgrounds go, this is by far the worst campsite I have ever had. Did the National Parks Service spend an entire 5 minutes planning this wonderful layout? I have as much privacy as taking two parking spaces in a Walmart parking lot. (No offense to Walmart).

If that wasn’t bad enough, the asshole is the big gold RV thinks it’s his right to play crappy oldies music on amplified speakers outside his RV.
I am not without blame in this situation. I walked up to him without any tact, and say “I didn’t drive all the way out here to listen to your crappy music!”. I had to repeat myself three times. That was because the music was so loud, he was so drunk, or he got his cheap hearing aid from Walmart. (No offense to Walmart).
As expected, he gets all up in my face and shoves me, trying to start a fight. I had no intensions of escalating to a fight. Sadly, I don’t have enough experience in that area. I would have loved to throw him down (like those incredible savings at Walmart!).
Luckily, one of the young fathers two vans down from mine came over and deescalated things. Mr. A. goes on about how he’s 70 years old and the music will be off in 30 minutes….
I go back to my van to try to think of my alternatives. The RV site has no host to help out. I drive over to the other two regular campsite loops, but they’re full. I drive back to Camp Walmart (No offense to Walmart) and make dinner, doing my best to ignore the music. Mr. A. has lowered the volume a little, but two hours later, the music is still going.
I feel like I could hide out in the van for the rest of the evening. But even if I keep busy all day every day, there will be three more nights of this asshole. I decide it’s just not worth it and drive back to Kalaloch Campground. Unfortunately, Kalaloch Campground is full. But I had scouted out a forest service road earlier in the week because I didn’t know if I could get a reservation last Sunday night.
I drive over to the spot off the forest service road and park the van. It’s 9:00 pm by now. The sky is the darkest sky I’ve seen in a long time and there are lots a stars out. Beautiful! Just in case I get the knock on the window in the middle of the night telling me to move on, I keep everything in the van locked down and sleep in my clothes.
I didn’t sleep great, but I never got the knock on the window and the predawn view was nice.

We hit the road early and now we are back at Circle Creek RV Resort in Oregon! We previously spend 6 nice days here before heading to Washington. I’ve had a hot shower and just finished two loads of laundry. Now we can rest for a few days and figure out what we will do next…
