Painted Hills, OR

After a shaky start to the afternoon on Wednesday, I had a very pleasant evening at Priest Hole. To the west, there was a pretty sunset:

And to the east, an almost full moon rose about the mountains:

I usually retreat to the van after sundown, but the moon was bright and the crickets were singing, so we just sat outside until about 9:00 pm. I heard unfamiliar bird calls – one which turned out to be a ring throated pheasant. Just a very nice evening.

On Thursday, I waited until 1:00 pm to head over to the Painted Hills. Very interesting site! I rushed the visit some because I was worried about having Sam out in the heat for too long. But it worked out fine. We took 3 short hikes and Sam had time to cool off between walks as we drove to the next location.

Tomorrow, I plan to start the long drive to Leslie Gulch. Maybe I’ll break that up into a two day drive?
