Grand Teton National Park, WY

I’ve been having a hard time deciding what to do on this visit to Grand Teton National Park. Maybe it’s from all the traveling that I’ve been doing and that the Tetons are not new to me. I mostly feel like I need a rest, so I’ve been visiting the park in the morning and returning to camp by early afternoon and relaxing in camp.

Love those fall colors!

I’ve also been surprised at how busy the park is this late in the season. But that just might be the new normal for State and National Parks since covid.

Saturday and Sunday morning were a treat with 3 moose visiting the loop of the campground where I’m staying!

On Saturday morning, I was walking Sammy before sunrise and heard a noise. There on the hill on the front side of the campground where 3 moose! One big bull moose and two cows. I took as good pictures as I could with my phone considering the low light. Further down the loop A were several people watching the moose, some with telephoto lens.

The moose didn’t seem to be in any hurry to leave so we went back to the van and got my good camera and long lens. When we got back, the moose were still on the other side of the hill, which didn’t give me a very good view. But after a while, the bull suddenly ran down the hill and across the loop A road and into an open field. That gave me a much better view! Here are some of the shots from Saturday morning:

On Sunday morning, we were going to drive over to where the Gros Ventre Rivers crosses Highway 98 (there was lots of backed up traffic there on Saturday). But as were where driving the loop A road, the moose where in the field behind loop A! So I drove the van back to my campsite and we walked back to take pictures a second morning in a row! They were even closer today!

I don’t know if the bull was looking at me. There were other people around, but it sure felt like he was and I was getting ready to take cover.

Another bull moose passed in the distance and the bull turned to investigate. I thought we might see an encounter, but sadly we did not.

Sammy has had very little reaction to the moose. He got excited when he saw them run across the road on Saturday. Besides that, he has not shown any interest in them. It might be that the sagebrush is tall enough that he just can’t see them off in the distance. Some folks stop to pet Sam, which he enjoys much more than the moose!
